Jesse Earl Morton, son of Richard and Jemima Morton, was born May 20, 1876, in Rochester township, Cedar county, Iowa. Following a fall at his home he passed away at St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids on Aug. 17, 1955, at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 27 days.

He was united in marriage to LaVerna Carney on Aug. 3, 1911, at Waterloo, Iowa. To this union were born two daughters and one son.

He received his education in the Cedar county schools and graduated from State Teachers college at Cedar Falls in 1907. He taught school for many years and it was his wish that the pallbearers be some of his former students.

He was a member of the Presbyterian church and taught a Sunday school class for a number of years. While his health permitted he faithfully attended church.

From 1934 to 1946 he served Tipton as a capable mayor and was proud of the record of good city government established by his administration.

He was widely known throughout eastern Iowa, having been a real estate broker for the past 35 years.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Don Bernet of Tipton, Mrs. Sterl McCullough of Hampton, two grandchildren, Nancy and Roger McCullough; also two sisters, Mrs. John Birch and Mrs. John Daughterty, both of Springdale, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son Roger Elwood Morton who passed away October 12, 1933, at the age of 18 years, and four brothers and two sisters.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him in this community and who have enjoyed his friendly counsel and sagacious comments on current events for many years.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Aug. 19, in the Sheets & Dahn funeral home with Rev. Raymon Ferguson officiating and interment in Tipton Masonic cemetery.
