Robert Varney, a former resident of this place, was instantly killed at Elm Grove, Wisconsin, Saturday. The deceased was a resident of Washington, Iowa, where he has lived for some time. He had lately been employed with the cement gang for one of the railway companies. The work train with which they were connected was standing on a siding and Mr. Varney, together with a companion, was walking on the main track when they were struck by a rapidly moving passenger engine. His companion jumped and escaped but Mr. Varney was hurled about 100 feet and instantly killed. The body was taken to his home at Washington, to his grief stricken family. The funeral was held Monday.
His two sisters living here received a message Saturday evening telling of the accident and went to Washington. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his untimely death.
