John Leonard was born near Greystones, county Wicklow, Ireland, on Dec. 4th, 1825. He came to America in 1846 in company with his three sisters and widowed mother. In 1851, he settled near Springdale, Iowa, and lived in same vicinity since, with the exception of two years spent in the western part of the state. He was a member of the Protestant Methodist church of North Liberty, Iowa.

On November 6, 1903, occurred the death of his wife Mary Ann Leonard.

Two sons and six daughters survive to mourn the loss of their father. His death occurred at Springdale, on Nov. 23rd, 1906, and the remains were interred in the North Liberty cemetery on Nov. 26th. At which time also was held the burial of his infant grandson, John Leonard, aged eight days, and was mourned by the parents, John P. and Katherine M. Leonard, and other relatives.
