23 February 1905 - West Branch Times

Died at 9 o'clock, on the morning of February 8, 1905, Rebecca H., wife of Richard H. Hollingsworth, deceased. The beloved mother and grandmother passed away after an illness of three weeks' duration, surrounded by her loved ones, patient and uncomplaining to the last. The dear hands that have for so long ministered to the needs and comfort of others are folded in the long repose. The frail body, rendered thin by suffering, time and grief over the loss of a beloved companion, will soon be hid from our tearful gaze.

But the memory of this sweet and innocent life will never fade from the minds and hearts of those privileged to know her. Her kind heart responded with quick and tender sympathy to every call of helplessness or suffering; her gentle nature made loving friends of all who came within the circle of her sympathy and affection.

It seems fitting that, at this time, we make mention of the husband and lifelong compion, who preceded her by some three months' time.

Richard H. Hollingsworth departed this life October 23, 1904, after a brief struggle of only a few moments' duration. He was born in Warren county, Ohio, April 27, 1821. At the early age of twenty years he married the subject of this sketch, then taking up active life, first as a millwright, afterward as a farmer. He farmed for several years in Indiana, again in Peoria county, Ill. In 1854 he settled on a farm near Iowa City, from which point he came to Montgomery county. Here, in time, he became the owner of three farms, besides some town proprty. The marriage of this devoted couple occured July 1, 1841. Hence, to the time of his death they had travelled together along life's pathway for a period of over sixty-three years.

Rebecca Hastings was born August 26, 1824. She was the daughter of William and Sarah Hastings, the father a native of North Carolina. They moved from that state to Wayne county Indiana, where they lived out their lives. The children born to them were twelve in number, Rebecca being the last. She was married at the age of 17. From this time she followed the fortunes of her husband, and, as the years went by, became the mother of five children: Margaret, William H., deceased; Julia H. Allin, Albert N. and Perry S. Thus lived and died this worthy couple, whose natures were in such perfect accord, and whose only grief, in the last days of their companionship, lay in the fear that "one would be taken and the other left." But the separation was not for long. Much as we love her we would not call back the dear old face and faded form, knowing in our hearts that it is much better as it is. --Coffeyville (Kan.) Record.

Mr. Hollingsworth will be well remembered by many of the older residents of this vicinity. He and his estimable wife were members of the society of Friends. In 1854 they settled on what is now part of the A. R. Ohl farm. Mr. Hollingsworth was an uncle of N. H. Crook, of this place.
