26 July 1888 - The Local Record

Following the announcement in last weeks issue, of the death of John Heacock, which occurred at his home in this city on the 18th inst., after an illness of only one week it would be proper to say the deceased was aged 71 years 4 months and 7 days. He was born near the village of Marlboro, Stark county Ohio, on the 3rd day of the 11th months 1817, soon after his parents, Nathan and Hannah Heacock from Redstone Pa. settled in that part of the country.

He was joined in marriage, 7th month 4th, 1838, to Ann Gruwell, who still survives him, and with whom he lived to enjoy a happy union of over half a century, having passed the golden epoc just two weeks prior to his death. In the spring of 1855 the family moved to Iowa and settled on the farm at Honey Grove, where they lived till something over a year ago, when the old people retired from the more active duties of life and settled to West Branch.

Not only his parents, but his ancestors on both sides were Friends for generations back from which he inherited the puritan like principles of the early days of that sect, which he adopted as his rule of action through life, and a faith which we have all confidence to believe saved him in death. He was remarkably firm in his conviction of right and duty, but kind and considerate toward those who might differ with him in judgment. As a neighbor he lived an exemplary life was loved and respected by all who knew him and he will be sadly missed by his sorrowing aged companion and bereaved children, five of whom were present at his death, two arriving soon after, and three far away, two daughters in Washington Ter and a son in Arizona were unable to get here. The funeral was large.
