13 June 1929 - West Branch Times

In the death of Mrs. Harry B. Davidson, which occurred at her home in Canistota, S.D., last Wednesday, the community was bereft of one of its estimable citizens.

Della Mae Gruwell was born at West Branch, Iowa, March 3, 1887, and died at her home in Canistota, S. D., June 5, 1929, aged 42 years, 3 months and 2 days.

She began teaching school when she was 17 years old, and taught 3 years in Iowa, and then came to South Dakota where she taught for 5 years in rural schools and 3 years in the Canistota school.

On August 10, 1915, she was united in marriage to Harry B. Davidson of Canistota, at her home in West Branch, Iowa, and after a short wedding trip, she returned with her husband to Canistota, where they have made their home till the time of her death.

To this unions was born one son, Robert. Besides her husband and son she leaves her aged parents, four sisters and two brothers, to revere the memory of her splendid life.

Mrs. Davidson was reared in the Friends church and on coming to Canistota she united with the Methodist church, of which she was a faithful and active member.

Mrs. Davidson lived an active and useful Christian life that endeared her to those who knew her best, for she was unselfish in her devotion to the church and Sunday school, and to every good and worthy cause.

She was taken ill about eight months ago, and during the last few months her suffering was great, but in it all she never complained, but bore her pain and the terrible ordeal as only they who have conquering faith can do.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and of the Rebekah lodges, and so leaves a host of friends who cherish her memory as of one tried and true.

There was no dark valley for her, she fought a good fight and has gone home.

A funeral was held at the M.E. church in Canistota at 10 a.m., June 8th, after which the body was taken by auto to Sioux Falls, S.D., and then by train to West Branch, Iowa, the home of her parents, where a funeral was held Monday at 2 p.m., and interment was made in the West Branch cemetery.

Those who came from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Gayman and two sons, Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Gayman, Clarence; Edward Davidson, Harrisburg, Penn; Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Betzing, Paul and Edna, Salem, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Johnston, Columbus Junction; Roy Gruwell and family, Iowa City; Miss Forestine Negus, West Liberty; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Bolon, Iowa City.
