2 June 1881 - West Branch Local Record

The friends of Rev. A. S. Bean received the sad intelligence Tuesday, of his death, about 12 o'clock of that day, at Montour. His mother had been with him some time and was at his bedside when he died, but his father and sister, who started Tuesday morning for Montour, did not get there in time to see him alive. He died of typhoid fever. He was a fine young man had been in the Methodist ministry about three years and his work gave promise of a useful life. His remains will be brought to this place for burial today, and the funeral will occur at 4 o'clock P.M. We hope to give a more extended obituary notice next week.

9 June 1881 - West Branch Local Record

Died at Montour, Iowa, Tuesday, Mary 31st, 1881, at 1:02 P.M., of Fever, REV. ALLAN S. BEAN, of the Upper Iowa M. E. Conference, in his 29th year. Burial at West Branch, Iowa, June 2d at 4 P.M.

Rev. Allan Smith Bean, son of Clark and S. J. Bean, was born June 8th, 1852, at Hazel Green, Wisconsin. Moved with his parents to Waukon, Iowa in 1858 from there to West Branch, Iowa, in June, 1870. Resided at this place until 1875, then removing to Boone, Iowa, where he was employed as clerk, for a short time, then engaging in the musical instrument business, in 1876 he removed to Ogden, Iowa. While at this place, during a revival meeting conducted by Evangelist Knapp, he was converted, and with the same impulsiveness and enthusiasm that had characterized him through life, he entered on the work of laboring for the salvation of others, he, with Elder Knapp, holding meetings at a number of points (among others West Branch), Brother Al. leading the singing. In the year 1878, he joined the Upper Iowa Methodist Conference, and was sent as a supply to Gilman, Iowa, where, by request, he was returned for the succeeding year. In 1880 he was stationed as Pastor at Montour and LeGrand, Iowa, residing at Montour, where he died.

As a son and brother he was the life of the family, generous, affectionate, loyal and true, as ever brother was. And it is almost impossible to realize, that we will never more greet him on earth,
