8 June 1905 - West Branch Times

Henry Winfield Butler, son of M. V. and E. P. Butler, was born in Pleasant Valley, Johnson county, Iowa, Dec. 25, 1869 and died June 1, 1905, at his home at Rocklin, California. He came with his parents to West Branch when only three years of age, where he grew to manhood and left with his fathers' family for Nebraska in Feb. 1889, from which place he left in company with his brother, Bert, for his future home in Rocklin, Ca., Oct. 10, 1890, where he quietly sank to rest in the 36th year of his age surrounded by a loving wife and three children and one brother.

The news of his demise came as a great shock to his relatives here as he was supposed to be in good health until the letter telling of his demise was received Tuesday. We publish the letter received from his brother, Bert:
Rocklin, Cal., June 2, 1905.
Dear Brother Newt:
This is a sad message I have to send you but it must be done. Our dear brother Win passed away last night a seven o'clock. I write you as I think you can break the news to mother, father, brother Tom and our dear sisters. He took sick last Saturday night, took to bed and never got better. He had pneumonia. I stayed by his bed side from Wednesday 2 p.m. until the end came and also his dear wife. We did everything that could be done but it seemed as though nothing could do him any good. We had a good doctor and he seemed to take an interest in him. He will be buried tomorrow at New Castle, Cal. Funeral services will be held in the Congregational church at 10:30. He leaves three children beside a loving wife. Aunt Prudy is here and Dave Cole will be up tonight. I will write again as soon as every thing is over. I am so nervous I can hardly write, break the news to all the best you can and write me as soon as you get this. Your loving brother BERT BUTLER
