Melissa Jane Hain was born in Tippecanoe county, Ind., Dec. 3, 1845, and departed this life Feb. 11, 1904, at the age of 58 years, 2 months and 8 days. She came to Iowa with her parents in 1847, residing in Cedar county continuously, except eight years, of which time seven years were spent in Crawford county, Iowa, and most of the last year in Johnson county.

She was united in marriage with John G. Mayer, Oct. 8, 1872, she being the mother of nine children, of which three have preceded the mother to the future home. She leaves to mourn her loss, husband, six children, four brothers and two sisters. In the spring of 1872 she united with the United Brethren church of Sugar Creek, Cedar county, Iowa, in which her right still remains.

A brief service was held at Joshua Young's at 9 o'clock a.m., Feb. 13, conducted by Rev. Stribling, after which she was buried at Bethel church.
