6 October 1904 - West Branch Times

On October 1st, 1904, occurred the death of Etley O. Whitacre, death resulting from internal injuries received in a runaway.

The deceased was born July 16, 1851, in Columbia county, Ohio, came with his parents to Iowa when a child and which place has since been his home. He was married to Miss Susie Hartman, Jan. 11, 1882, three daughters and one son being born to this union, and the wife, mother and two sisters survive him whose loss will be more keenly felt and the grief doubled by so sudden and apparently premature a death.

Mr. Whitacre was a man who lived according to his convictions, plain in his outward demeanor, he deprecated show or display of any kind and lived his life in an upright manner before God and man. With a great love for home and its surroundings, ever striving to add to the happiness and comfort of his family, and aged mother, to whom he was ardently devoted. The funeral services were conducted at the late residence Sunday at 2:00 p.m., in charge of the pastor, Mrs. Mary Hornaday and the choir of the Springdale Friends church. The reading of the 23rd Psalm with a few words added were impressive and appropriate. The large gathering of people in attendance and the many floral tributes bespoke the respect and sympathy of the community.

The interment was made in the Springdale cemetery. Messrs. Charles Schiele, Henry Swarts, Marion Kirby, Eb Fogg, Ellis Smith and William Erb acting as pallbearers.
