26 July 1917 - West Branch Times

John Morris was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, the fourth of Fifth month, 1834, and departed this life the twenty-first of Seventh month, 1917, at the age of eighty-three years, two months and seventeen days. When four years of age, he removed to Marion county, Ohio. When 19 years of age he came to Cedar county, Iowa, where his home has been much of the time since. He has made five trips to Ohio and three to Colorado in these years and lived for twelve years in East Tennessee. However, his home has been at West Branch the greater part of the time for the last 64 years.

He was a birthright member of the Friends church and remained in this through his life. He has been a faithful Christian since early life.

During the last years he read the bible and sang familiar hymns almost continually, and the last year especially has longed to go to his Heavenly home.

His last illness was of about six weeks duration, and during this time he prayed frequently that he might be released from the things of this life, if God's will for it to be so. He distributed many tracts and leaflets and tried to influence for good those about him. Many of his loved ones have preceded him, but his children all remain to remember the good teachings of their father--Jennie and Saml. A. of California; Mrs. P. A. Smith of Guthrie Center, Iowa; J. J. of Agate, Colo., and A. W. of West Branch, Ia.

The funeral was held in the Friends church at Springdale, conducted by Rev. Laura Townsend, assisted by Rev. Milo Rees, on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Springdale cemetery.
