16 March 1882 - West Branch Local Record

DIED On the morning of the 14th inst., at his residence in West Branch, Iowa, of typhoid pneumonia, E. W. Savage, M.D. aged 45 years.

Dr. Savage was born in Parkman, Geoga County, Ohio, and in early life removed with his parents to Marlboro, in the same State, where he received a competent education. There he married Miss Rachel Gaskill of the same place, and soon after commenced study for the medical profession. When the civil war broke out he entered the service as a surgeon, and for three years his time was occupied in giving aid and comfort to the afflicted and unfortunate of his fellow countrymen, he receiving injuries himself, which resulted in the total loss of one eye.

At the close of the war he removed with his family to Iowa, and settled at West Liberty as a medical practitioner, but having a large and increasing patronage in and around West Branch, he finally located at this place about eleven years ago. Prior to this time he had received serious bodily injury in a railroad wreck, from which he was a sufferer to the last. Five years ago his wife became an invalid, and has not been able to leave her couch since, except temporarily, being entirely helpless the greater part of the time. Two years ago the doctor himself was stricken down by a disease, which became chronic in its nature. Since that time he has been obliged to give up his profession almost entirely, though his indomitable will was too great for his bodily strength, and he would attend to calls even when he was far the greater sufferer.

In him the public schools of this place have lost a faithful patron, he having for many years held a responsible position on the Board. But in society none will feel his loss more than the Young People's Christian Association in which he has counselled and labored for years, in behalf of our Redeemer's Kingdom, and during the past winter, many fervent prayers have ascended in the interest of our honored and beloved president. He was a consistent member of the Christian Church, and departed this life in full assurance of immortal glory. He leaves a stricken wife, a son and daughter, to mourn his departure.

Services were held on Wednesday the 15th, in the M.E. church at 3 P.M., conducted by Elder J. N. Smith, of West Liberty, Iowa.
