21 June 1928 - West Branch Times

On Saturday morning, May 26, at about 7:00 o'clock, Mrs. A. R. Kennedy passed away at her home in this city.

Mrs. Kennedy had been an invalid for the past seventeen years. She was a patient sufferer and her children were untiring in their efforts to give her every comfort. Several weeks ago she became seriously ill and began to fail rapidly. Everything possible was done for her by her children, who were all with her during her last illness, but death conquered.

Mrs. Kennedy was a highly respected woman and with her husband reared and educated their children. She was a kind and loving mother and neighbor. Always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone needing assistance. Her friends were numbered by her acquaintances.

Sarah Atwell Schooley was born about the year 1858, and was adopted from an orphanage in Iowa City, Iowa, by Dilworth and Eliza Schooley, of Springdale, Cedar county, Iowa, at the age of about four or five years.

She was educated and grew to womanhood at this place, living with her foster parents until her marriage to Albert R. Kennedy, September 6, 1880, at which place they made their home on a farm; a few years later moving to Greenfield, Iowa, where they conducted a small market. In 1889 Mr. Kennedy with an old friend came to Nebraska, and filed on homesteads and established their residences near Harrison, Nebraska, bringing their families out a few months later. They made this their home for several years moving to Crawford in 1893, where they opened up a market and grocery, which Mr. Kennedy conducted until the time of his death in 1919, having preceded her in death 9 years, 1 month and 22 days.

Six children were born to this union, all of whom are left to mourn her departure, namely Carroll A., Hannah, Earl D., Clara E., Vigil C. and Avis M., all of Crawford, except Clara, now Mrs. F. J. Herfert, of Lewiston, Montana. Five grandchildren survive, Gerald and Maurice Kennedy, Kenneth and Arlene Herfert and Merriam Kennedy.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Kennedy home, where a large number of friends gathered to pay their last respects to her. The rooms of the home were banked with beautiful flowers, tokens of esteem from relatives and friends. Interment was made in the Crawford cemetery, where she was laid to rest by the side of her husband, who preceded her to the Great Beyond.--Crawford (Neb.) Tribune.
