31 March 1898 - West Branch Times

After an illness of only about one week of pluro-pneumonia, J. E. Myers, cashier of the West Branch State Bank, was called hence to be seen of men no more. He had been feeling somewhat indisposed for a few days, but able to hold his position in the bank until Tuesday evening, on reaching his home he took to his bed and soon after a physician was called who found him in great bodily suffering, after some relief he remained about the same until Tuesday morning of this week when it soon became apparent that his condition was beyond the reach of all human skill, and he quietly passed away at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning, March 30, aged 54 years. He leaves a sorrowing wife who has been a helpless invalid for several years, and two sons to mourn their irreparable loss, for whom the most intense and universal sympathy is felt. He was a loyal Christian, a member of the Presbyterian church, and no man could have been taken from the community that would be more missed, yet there was not a quieter or more peaceful nor one more devoted to duty. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Furniss and held at the home this afternoon at 4 o'clock, after which the remains will be taken to Wilton, for interment.

7 April 1898 - West Branch Times

John E. Myers was born at Tribe's Hill, Montgomery Co., N.Y., on May 5, 1845, and died at his home, West Branch, Iowa, March 30th 1898, being almost 58 years of age at the time of his death.

His early manhood was spent at Saratoga Springs, N.Y., to which place he had removed along with his parents while only a boy, and it was while residing at Saratoga Springs, while still in the freshness of youth, that he identified himself with the people of God, becoming an active communicant of the Presbyterian church.

In the spring of 1868, he came to the state of Iowa, taking up his residence at Wilton Junction, and transferring his membership to the Presbyterian church of that place. The church at Wilton soon became aware of his sterling Christian character, and his fitness for intelligent and consecrated service, and thus elected him in the fall of 1868, to the honorable and responsible position of Ruling Elder.

It was also while reisidng at Wilton, that he became acquainted with the young lady who joined hand and heart with him as wife, for in the year 1874 he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Pentzer, with whom he lived happily for twenty-four years, until their union was severed by the message of death.

About eight years ago he removed with his family to West Branch, having been chosen as cashier of West Branch Bank, the duties of which office he discharged with utmost satisfaction to bank officials and the general public. Little need be said of our brother more than that he was faithful, upright, and capable in every duty and relationship of life in the home, the church, in business and social life. Faithful first to his God, and second to his fellow men.

He lived in the enjoyment of Christian faith, and died in the comforts and blessed hope of the gospel. His departure is our loss, but it is his sure reward, for he has entered on the inheritance of God's children in the home where there will be no more sin, nor sickness, nor death, but an eternal life of peace and joy.

The remains were taken to Wilton Junction, for interment, the funeral services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. Geo. Furniss, assisted by Rev. N. A. McAnley pastor of the Presbyterian of Wilton Junction.

To the bereft wife and sons, and brother we offer our sincere sympathy, and commend them to the Almighty Father for his comfort and grace.
