Mary Elizabeth Shaw was born in Bedford, England, July 11, 1832, and died at West Branch, Ia., Monday morning, Nov. 1, 1915. She grew to womanhood in Bedford and was there united in marriage to Henry Speight, April 12, 1853. Four years later, in April 1857, the young couple came to America and settled near Iowa City, Iowa. They afterwards moved to Graham township, Johnson county, on a farm, later moving to Oasis, Ia., where her husband died Sept. 9, 1912. At this time she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Wieder. During the last year of her life she lived at West Branch. Seven children survive her. Two children died in infancy. The children are: James H. of Oakland, Calif., Mrs. Sara Wieder, West Branch, Harrison L. of Iowa City, Frank R. of West Liberty, Alfred S. of West Branch, Mrs. Mary E. Crowe of Clarion and Chas. L. of Clarion. Other beloved members of the family are twelve grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Emma Booth of Bedford, England.

She united with the church in youth and always was a devoted Christian. She was a faithful and loving mother to her children, all of whom were at her bedside at the time of her death, except James of California.

The funeral occurred at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 3, from the home at West Branch and the interment at Oasis. Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Crowe and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Speight of Clarion, Frank Speight and family of West Liberty and Harrison Speight of Iowa City were present at the funeral, which was conducted by Rev. W. H. Mitchell of the M.E. church of West Branch.
