Thomas Townsend Hathaway, second son of Henry and Esther Hathaway, was born near Milan, Erie county, Ohio, September 24, 1855, and peacefully passed this life Sept. 26, 1924.

In 1872 he moved with his parents to West Branch, Iowa. On March 22, 1877, he was united in marriage to Ida H. Branson of West Branch. They have resided here since their marriage.

Since his arrival here in 1872 he has been actively engaged in business. For 33 years he was engaged in the undertaking and furniture business. More recently, though, he has conducted a variety and dry goods store. In all his business dealings Mr. Hathaway was exactingly honest. West Branch will miss him because he was a Christian business man. The church will miss such an ardent and faithful worker, ever mindful of the "King's Business." For 35 years he has served as treasurer of the local Friends church, and was also active in Yearly Meeting circles. His character was above reproach. Ever an upright, fair, friendly Christian, he had hosts of friends, all of whom deeply mourn his departure. His influence during his whole life was openly manifest and now that he has departed from us, his influence lives on. Memory of him will be lasting and pleasant.

Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Everett Morris, of West Branch and eight grandchildren, one brother Chas. Hathaway of New York City, one sister Mrs. Mary Wright of Pasadena, Calif., one sister-in-law Mrs. I. W. Haines of West Branch, Iowa.

The funeral was held in the Friends church Sunday afternoon, conducted by the present pastor, Leslie Barrett, assisted by the former pastor, Walter H. Wilson. Interment in West Branch cemetery.
