Esther Emily Brantingham was born in Butlerville, Jennings county, Indiana, July 25, 1853. The family came to Springdale, Iowa, in the summer of 1869, removing to West Branch two years later. She was united in marriage with William L. Hoover at Iowa City in February, 1875. To this union were born four children, Arthur E. Hoover of Marshalltown, Ia., Mrs. Lillie Jones of Union, Ia., William E. Hoover of Union, Iowa, and Miss Jennie Hoover of LeGrand, all of whom survive her. The husband and father preceded her to the better land, departing this life at Spirit Lake, Iowa, Aug. 31, 1892.

Of the immediate family two brothers and one sister survive to mourn their loss, Barclay Brantingham of Albia, Iowa, Mrs. Jennie Kremer of West Branch and Alvin Brantingham of Lockman, Ia., all of whom were with her in her last hours.

After more than a year of lingering illness she passed away at the home of her daughter in Union, Ia., April 4, 1913, aged 59 years, 8 months and 10 days. The trying days of her more than a year of suffering were marked by a spirit of christian patience, beautiful to see. No word of complaint came from her lips. The strong, firm faith of all the years becoming only the more evident as the hours of trial came on. We, the children, look back to a home atmosphere which made it the perfectly natural thing to enter the service of Christ.

He friends knew her as a quiet, unobtrusive soul, always ready to help in any time of need. "She being dead yet speaketh."

The remains were brought to this place Saturday and the funeral took place from the Friends church Sunday afternoon at 2:40. Interment was in the West Branch cemetery. The relatives who attended the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hoover of Marshalltown, Rev. and Mrs. Clifford Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hoover of Union, Mr. and Mrs. Davis Hoover, Jerry Hoover and Miss Jennie Hoover of LeGrand and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hoover of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. Barclay Brantingham of Albia, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Brantingham of Lockman, Mr. and Mrs. James Westfall and Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Gongwer of West Liberty and Wm. A. Kremer of Lamont.
