20 February 1913 - West Branch Times

Susanna Phillips was born near East Liverpool, Ohio, Dec. 2, 1826, and was united in marriage with John C. Hunter, May 1, 1851. To this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters, all of whom survive except one son, John, who died in childhood. Those surviving are Wm. Hunter of Earlham, Ia.; Thomas of Winterset, Ia.; Mrs. Mary Greene of West Branch, Ia.; Mrs. Linnie Coffman, of Laton, Calif.; Mrs. Ida Coulter and Andrew Hunter of Oasis and Miss Etta at home. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Sarah Bennett, and a number of nieces and nephews in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Mr. and Mrs. Hunter were among the pioneers of Iowa, having come from Ohio in 1853, and located on a farm in Graham township, Johnson county, where they resided until five years ago when they removed to West Branch; only a few months elapsed when the husband and father was called to the better land, and Feb. 14, 1913, the mother, after a short illness, passed peacefully away surrounded by her children, except Mrs. Coffman, whose ill health prevented her being present.

In young womanhood, Mrs. Hunter united with the Methodist Episcopal church, and throughout her long life remained a faithful, consistent member. In the community she was ever ready to help in time of sickness or need, and her greatest interest was always in home and with her family.

The funeral took place Sunday, Feb. 16, the friends and relatives meeting at the home at 1:00 o'clock, and conveying the remains to the M.E. church at Oasis, where the services were conducted by Rev. W. H. Mitchell of this place, at 2:00 p.m. The interment was in the Oasis cemetery.
