Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, at 10 o'clock from the Snider Chapel, for Mrs. Anna Maxson. The services were in charge of Rev. Lloyd Tennant, pastor of the Methodist church, and later the body was taken to the Springdale cemetery for burial.

Anna Elizabeth Phelps was born May 8, 1856, near Springdale, Cedar county, Iowa, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Will Sanger on Saturday, March 22, aged 67 years, 10 months and 14 days. She was the eldest of a family of eleven children. Most of her life was spent near Springdale. She lived in Linn county for two years, and during late years had made her home in or near West Liberty.

On December 1, 1878, she was united in marriage with George F. Bates and to them was born one child, now Mrs. Nellie B. Sanger. Mr. Bates died in July of 1882. On January 4, 1888, she married H. K. Maxson, and to this union were born three children: L. K. Maxson of near West Liberty; Floyd H. Maxson of Atalissa, and Chesley C. Maxson of near West Liberty. Mr. Maxson preceded her in death seven years and two days; and since his death she had made her home with her youngest son, Chesley.

Her health had been failing for about a year and on December 29 of last year she submitted to an operation, but after all that loving hands could do she continued to fail. She was a kind and loving mother, unusually ambitious to be doing something for others and always made friends wherever she lived. She was a birthright member of the Friends church and a firm believer in its teachings.

Besides her own children and 12 grandchildren, she leaves to mourn, nine brothers and sisters: Mrs. Susan Montgomery, Mrs. Harry Rockefellow, Mrs. Howard Rockefellow, and Mrs. John Connor of West Liberty; W. C. Phelps of Springdale; Mrs. Emma Henderson of Central City; Walter Phelps of Wilton, R. J. Phelps of Iowa City and Edward Phelps of Davenport. Her father and mother and one brother preceded her in death. She also leaves four step-children: Mrs. Harry McCann of this city; J. H. and Louis Maxson of Devil's Lake, N.D., and Argus Maxson of California. --West Liberty Index

The neighborhood was grieved on Saturday to hear of the death of Mrs. Anna Maxson which occurred at West Liberty at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Sanger. Mrs. Maxson was the wife of the late H. K. Maxson and she had lived in this community the most of her life with the exception of the last few years which she spent in and near West Liberty. She has a large circle of relatives and freinds here who will mourn the loss of a faithful friend and neighbor. She had been seriously ill for a number of months and not long ago she went to the State University hospital at Iowa City where she submitted to a critical operation but her recovery was not be be and death came as a relief after days and weeks of intense suffering. She leaves her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Sanger, of West Liberty; Leffie near Centerdale, Floyd in the Atalissa neighborhood and Chesley near West Liberty to mourn the loss of a mother. This community extends sympathy to those who are bereaved. The funeral services were held in the Friends church on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock and the body laid away in the cemetery north of town.
