17 July 1879 - West Branch Local Record

DIED. MR. JONAS MORRISON, one of the pioneers of Iowa, was called to his rest on the morning of the 11th of July, 1879, aged 78 years and 9 months. Buried at West Branch, Saturday, July 12th, at 3 o'clock P.M. Funeral services at the Presbyterian church.

The subject of the above notice was born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, Oct. 19th, 1800 His love for the freedom of frontier life was shown in his youth, as he left his native county and came to Pittsburg when he was 14 years old. Soon afterward he pressed on among the frontiersmen with his mother to Ohio, which was then the "Far West". In 1851 he came to Iowa and remained until the gold excitement in California was at its height, when he went on still farther West with the tide of prospectors across the plains, strewn with the skeletons of their comrades, to seek his fortune in the mines of the El Dorado of North America. He stayed there five years, then after visiting his children in Pennsylvania he returned to Iowa, where he has since resided.

He leaves a widow and one daughter at West Branch, three daughters in Pennsylvania, one son in Indiana and one in California.
