5 March 1896 - West Branch Times

A dreadful circumstance occurred to Springdale last Friday in which little Earl Phelps came to sudden death and his parents Walter and Gerty lost their last remaining child, a bright and beautiful little boy of some three or four years of age. The little fellow had entered a field where horses were running and was as supposed kicked by one of them. When picked up he was in a dying condition soon breathing his last. The afflicted parents have the truest and tenderest sympathies of all who know them and hearts are turned in pity towards the lonely home where the childish footsteps come no more. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Hammond in the Friends' church last Sunday and the interment in the cemetery north of town.
