R. Ellen Crew, daughter of Gideon and Rebecca Crew, was born September 19, 1873, at Springdale, Iowa. Her early life was spent in the vicinity of Springdale and West Branch.

When about thirteen years of age she moved with her father to Kansas, where in 1889, she was married to Frank J. Butler. Twelve children were born to this union, one dying in infancy. In 1901, she with her family, moved to Springdale, Iowa, where the family have remained until February of this year, when they moved to their present home in the vicinity of West Branch.

She was a life member of the Friends church, her membership at present being with the Springdale Meeting. She leaves to mourn their loss a husband, eleven children, three brothers, Charles Crew of Pasadena, Calif., Edward E. Crew of San Jose, Calif., G. A. Crew of Compton, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. J. A. Westfall of West Liberty, Iowa, and Mrs. J. A. Barrington of Pasadena, Calif.

Mrs. Butler died May 10, 1913, being 39 years, 7 months and 21 days old. The funeral took place Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Friends church in West Branch. Rev. W. R. Miles officiating. The interment was in the West Branch cemetery.
