On the 22nd of Tenth month, 1912, at the Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids, occurred the death of Gladys Irene, the elder daughter of John C. and Jennie Spencer. She was born Ninth month, 1st, 1897, near West Branch, Iowa. For more than five years past she had made her home near Whittier, Iowa, with her uncle and aunt, Thomas and Elvira Spencer Stanley, her dear mother being at the hospital at Independence.

On the morning of the 18th, dear Irene complained of her stomach, but insisted on going to school, saying if she did not get better she would go to her aunt Amy, who lived near the school, and get something for it. Early on the morning of the 19th it was discovered she had appendicitis, but medical skill and loving care were in vain. Her sudden death came as a shock to friends and relatives.

Funeral 2:30 p.m. on the 24th at Friends' Meeting house at Whittier. Interment neary by. Taken by request from Springville New Era.
