12 June 1930 - West Branch Times

George Clinton Shrader, son of Frank and Elizabeth Shrader, was born in Washington county, Ohio, October 28, 1860, and passed away at St. Luke's hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, May 28, 1930.

When he was about six years of age, his father died, leaving the mother with a family of small children. His early years were spent helping his mother care for this family. In 1879 he came to Iowa City making his home with his uncle, Dr. J. C. Shrader. On April 25, 1883, he was united in marriage with Mary Louise Bailey, who preceded him in death September 12, 1913. To this union were born five children--Mary Elizabeth, now Mrs. Chas. Cressey; Julia Marion, now Mrs. John Wentz, and Melvin C., who survive him; Alice Louise and Frank Vincent having died in infancy. In the spring of 1887 he moved to the farm one mile south of West Branch where the home was made for 24 years.

He was married to Mildred Trafford, June 11, 1917, and for almost thirteen years their life together has been very happy. They lived in West Branch for a time and later moved to Springville, Iowa, where they made their home until the time of his death. He also leaves one brother, John Shrader, of Moline, Ill.

Words seem inadequate in expressing the loss of this unselfish man, whose character was above reproach. He was a man of sterling worth and integrity. To know him was to honor and respect him. He was a great lover of nature and saw beauty where many another did not. He greatly appreciated his home life. Much of his leisure time was spent in reading, thereby gaining a large store of information as well as much pleasure. He was a good and consistent Christian, believed in and practiced the rule of doing unto others as he wishes them to do unto him. Always ready and willing to go out of his way to help, aid or assist any one in need or distress, his passing will be mourned by all who knew him.

At the time of his death he was a member of Westminister Presbyterian church at Cedar Rapids.

His last illness was of short duration. Everything that medical skill and loving care could do was done, but to no avail.

Funeral services were held in the Friends church in West Branch, Saturday afternoon, May 31st, conducted by the Rev. W. A. Montgomery of Cedar Rapids, a former Presbyterian pastor here, and a personal friend, assisted by the Rev. G. W. Harvey. Burial was made in the West Branch cemetery.
