14 May 1925 - The Tipton Advertiser

Mrs. Nancy Hillyer died at the County Home last Saturday. The remains were taken to Clarence for interment. She had been an inmate of the insane department of the Home ever since it had been built, and at the time of her death was past eighty years of age.

Mrs. Hillyer was first adjudged insane July 8, 1878, and sent to the state hospital at Mt. Pleasant from which she was discharged in December of the following year. In 1881 she was sent to Mercy hospital at Davenport as incurable and was cared for there until the County Home was fitted to care for insane patients.

She was a member of a well known pioneer Cedar county family a (unreadable) of more than average culture and refinement. She was never a charity patient, the income from the estate left her by her husband, together with her widow's pension, being more than sufficient to recompense the county for her care as well as provide additional comforts and luxuries for her.
