5 May 1932 - The Tipton Advertiser

Funeral services for Mrs. Maud Coffman Versteeg, 54, lifetime resident of Iowa, who died Tuesday last at her home 1650 13th Street, Des Moines, were held last Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Harbach funeral home in Des Moines. Burial was in Glendale cemetery. The Rev. William Horatio Phelps of Central Presbyterian church assisted by the Rev. E. G. Williams of Westminster United Presbyterian church officiated.

Mrs. W. J. Versteeg was born in Tipton, May 29, 1877, the eldest daughter of Samuel I. and Mary O. Coffman and spent her early life in Tipton where she graduated from the Tipton high school. She then attended Cedar Rapids Business college and became secretary to Hon. Robert G. Cousins, widely known Iowa politician. She went to Des Moines to accept a position with Carr, Parker, Hewett & Wright, attorneys and later became associated with the State Board of Control.

She was an active member of Central Presbyterian church and an ardent worker in the Parent-Teacher association.

She had ability and a propensity for leadership and her religion was a dominant note in her life. Her Christianity was not merely a nominal affair but a vital matter which she did not hesitate to champion. Hers was a generous nature. She conserved money and material things with the utmost care and then gave out with the utmost generosity. Unostentatious in her philanthropic and helpful deeds, not but those nearest her knew their extent. Many whom she had helped mourned with her family last Friday knowing they had lost a true friend. The loyalty of her friends and neighbors was attested by the effort they made to show her love and respect when the end came.

Such a life as Mrs. Versteeg lived does not end with death, but goes on here with an ever widening influence.

She is survived by her husband, W. J. Versteeg, and a son, James C. of Des Moines; also a sister, Mrs. Edward E. Breazeale of Manson, Iowa.
