31 July 1914 - The Lowden News

J. D. Henry was not feeling well the fore part of last week and on Thursday evening grew decidedly **(part of the paragraph is unreadable)** about two o'clock in the morning he underwent an operation for appendicitis. He rallied from the operation in good shape and apparently was doing well until about six o'clock Sunday evening when symptoms showed that he was sinking. At two o'clock Monday morning his condition became alarming and his wife who was in attendance telephoned for his mother, Mrs. N. D. Henry, who was at the time staying with her son, L. L., in Cedar Rapids. His mother and brother, LeRoy, arrived in time to be at the bedside when he died. The remains were moved to his home here in the evening of the day of his death and placed into the home which he had left only four short days before.

J. D. Henry was born and raised in Lowden and has lived here all his life, with the exception of about three years when he lived at Mount Vernon. He was born May 22, 1881, and died July 27, 1914, at the age of 33 years, 2 months and 4 days. His death was caused from peritonitis following an operation for appendicitis.

He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. N. D. Henry, and was the youngest son of a family of nine children, of which one brother, one sister, and his father preceded him to the Great Beyond. The children dying in infancy and the father four years ago. His parents were of the earliest settlers in Cedar county, coming here when small children. His father, N. D. Henry served two years in the Civil War, joining at TIpton when a mere boy the 11th Iowa as a recruit in 1863, and serving with that company until the end of the war.

Jay received his education in the public school here after which he took up telegraphy, which occupation he followed until his death.

On March 11, 1903, he was united in marriage to Josephine Joerger of this place. Shortly after marrying he secured a position at Mount Vernon and lived there for three years. During the month of May, 1907, he was appointed Station Agent at Lowden and has lived here since. To this union two sons were born, Wayne and Don, now ten and eight years.

Deceased was a kind and loving husband, and an indulgent father. Knowing him as the writer did it can be truthfully said that he was a true and loyal friend to his fellowmen, never complaining or fault-finding and at all times attending strictly to his business duties, also possessing that rare quality of always having a good word and a pleasant smile for everyone he met.
