5 June 1914 - The Tipton Advertiser

News was received here this morning from Chicago of the death of Fred R. Johnson. The deceased was born and reared in Tipton and although gone from this place for twenty years or more is well remembered here by many friends who will b grieved by the news. The Drovers' Journal this morning says:

Fred R. Johnson, for many years sheep salesman on the local market for a number of the commission firms, died at St. Luke's hospital at 10:45 Thursday morning following an operation. Mr. Johnson was removed to the hospital a week ago to undergo an operation for hernia, from which he rallied speedily.

Complications set in on Wednesday and surgeons were compelled to operate early Thursday for strangulation of the bowels. His condition grew worse after the second operation and doctors announced that he could not live through the day.

His wife and several old-time friends were at his bedside for hours before death came.

Mr. Johnson was 47 years old and widely known among sheepmen of the western and corn belt states. A man of sterling qualities and genial disposition, his death was a shock to hundreds of friends in the local trade.

Besides the widow and two children he is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. M. O. Johnson, and several brothers and sisters. Funeral arrangements were not completed Thursday, but the remains were brought to his late residence, 8056 Green street.
