14 January 1921 - The Tipton Advertiser

Daniel Lynch died Wednesday morning, January 5, at 8:37 o'clock. His illness extended over a period of eight weeks and was caused by a fall which injured his hip and was the ultimate cause of his death. In the passing of Daniel Lynch Cedar county loses another of its pioneers. He was born in the Parish of Eve-Larey, County Cork, Iceland, in 1836, and received his education in Ballinggary, under Schoolmaster Healy. In the year 1861 he moved to the Parish of Bantry where six years later on March 3, 1867, he was united in marriage to Catherine Keallaher, daughter of Julia and Timothy Baum Keallaher. On Oct. 15, of this same year, he and his wife and mother set out for Queenstown where he secured passage on the boat City of Paris of the Cunard line. The trip across the ocean was made without accident or storm. He arrived at New York and from there proceeded westward, continuing until he arrived at Iowa City, Ia. After a short stay there he came to Gower township, Cedar county, where he bought some land, built a small house, and lived on the same farm until his death. He was the son of Daniel and Julia Lynch, and of a family of eight children, the only one to survive him being his sister, Mrs. John Sullivan of Marengo, Ia. He a was the father of eight children, two of whom, Julia and Michael, died before they reached 2 years of age. Those who survive are: Mrs. P. L. Toher of Mechanicsville, Ia.; Daniel of Denver, Colo.; John of Chickasha, Okla.; Jerry of Hills, Ia.; and Timothy and Dennis at home. These together with the beloved wife were with him when he died and were kneeling in prayer at his bedside. He also leaves twenty-six grandchildren.

His funeral took place on Friday morning, Jan. 7, at 10 o'clock at St. Joseph's church, Cedar Valley, where he had so faithfully attended for over 50 years. Rev. H. A. Knebel said the requiem mass and pronounced the last absolution after mass, and also officiated at the grave. He was buried in the family lot in the cemetery adjoining the church. During the funeral mass all the available space in the church was filled by the large congregation of relatives and friends. It was the largest attended funeral in many years, and perhaps with few exceptions the largest ever held there.

Those who attended from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Pat Driscoll of Elma, Ia.; Mrs. Dennis Sullivan and Mrs. J. Pelzer of Marengo, Ia.; I. H. Fitzpatrick and Con Gatens of Iowa City, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. D. J. McCarthy of Coggon, Ia.; Mrs. Ed Kenny, Mrs. Anthony Balik and Gertrude Lynch of Cedar Rapids, Ia.; P. P. Fitzpatrick of Kansas City, Mo.; and James Lynch of Hills, Ia.

In the death of Daniel Lynch there passes another of the pioneers of Cedar county. He came here over half a century ago, into a new and undeveloped country, but with a determination to make a home for himself and family, and how well he succeeded is known by all. Being of a genial disposition and having a kind and charitable heart he made many friends, but few, if any, enemies. Every one who knew him respected and esteemed him. He was one of the leading members of St. Joseph's church at Cedar Valley, and was most practical in his religious duties. His well spent life will be long remembered by those who knew him.
