12 February 1942 - The West Branch Times

Mrs. Mary E. Moore died at a little before midnight Tuesday in the hospital at Iowa City.

Mary E. Harrison was born in Brooklyn, N. Y. May 13, 1848, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harrison and was nearing her 94th birthday. She was of Irish descent, her parents coming to America in their youth. In 1837 shortly after the railroad has reached that point the family moved to Iowa City. Her father worked at his trade as a plaster and the children attended school in Iowa City, having advantage of the state university study courses.

The four girls became school teachers, and after the family moved to a farm northwest of West Branch, Mary taught the Fairview school of Graham township. Molly Brown who later became noted as Mrs. Carran, teacher of Herbert Hoover, was one of her pupils.

Mary Moore became the wife of Thomas Moore, who was reared near Cedar Bluffs, and their first home was six miles north of West Branch. In 1883 they moved to a farm less than two miles north of town, where their five daughters and four sons grew to maturity. Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Moore has continued to live on the farm, her son Glenn making his home with her in the recent years.

Mrs. Moore has been a woman of remarkable talents and vitality throughout her life. Until quite recently she transacted business in town and did her own marketing and her philosophy of life was hopeful and tolerant.

She had been in failing health and recently was taken to the hospital in Iowa City where she died Tuesday night.

Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the home.
