16 February 1899 - The Clarence Sun

Sunday night, February 12, occurred the death of Clifford Wehry at the age of 14 years. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday forenoon and the remains conducted to the Clarence cemetery for burial.

August 4, 1894 Clifford was accidently shot, the ball from the revolver entering the back of his neck and passing out the front, almost grazing the spinal cord. It caused paralysis instantly to take effect throughout his entire body below the wound, from which he never recovered, although every effort within the power of loving parents and kind friends was extended to him. From the time he was shot he has been patiently sitting in an invalid's wheel chair, and while in this he was taken to Philadelphia at one time, Indianapolis at another and to Chicago at still another for treatment in hopes that he might be benefited, but with very little beneficial results.

During all this time, four and a half years, he has been a great sufferer, though perhaps not in great pain. The fact that he must continuously remain in one position must of itself been a painful task, though he endured it patiently to an extent almost to cheerfulness, though he was probably aware that he could never be benefited, but lived in hopes.

Clifford was a bright, intelligent boy and very companionable among his young friends and acquaintances. He loved to read and passed many hours away that otherwise would have been unpleasant and tiresome. Before the accident happened to him he was a regular attendant at church and rarely failed to be in his class at Sunday school, where his presence was always welcome because of his cheerfulness and his readiness to learn. At school he was bright and quick to learn.

But his suffering is past, and those who knew him will always remember him as pleasant and cheerful, and a patiently enduring sufferer.

In conclusion of the above we have been requested to announce that Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Wehry and family desire to express their gratitude and thanks to neighbors and friends who have so constantly aided them with sympathy and kindly help during the four and a half years of Clifford's suffering.
