25 July 1901 - The Clarence Sun

Tipton Republican - Fred Eckerman was killed last Sunday forenoon, between 9 and 10 o'clock, by being kicked by a horse. He worked on the farm with Wm. Paulsen, who resides 6 1/2 miles northeast of Durant. Last Sunday morning, Mr. and Mrs. Paulsen left the place about 9 o'clock to visit the latter's mother. Before leaving Mr. Paulsen had suggested to Eckerman that the horse which had a sore neck ought to be attended to, and it was decided to bathe the sore with salt water. When Mr. and Mrs. Paulsen returned in the evening, at about 6 o'clock, they found Eckerman lying back of the sick horse, dead, with the right side of his face crushed, his neck broken, and his right shoulder out of place. The impression of a horseshoe could be plainly seen on the side of his fact. The way the accident came about, judging by circumstances, was that Eckerman went into the barn with a bucket of salt water and put it in the manger, and then attempted to put a twich on the horse's nose, but failing to do that, the supposition is that he became somewhat angry, and procuring a club, was in the act of striking the horse, when he received the fatal kick which ended his earthly career.
