7 May 1935 - The Tipton Advertiser

Funeral services were held Monday at the Methodist church for Mrs. Florence Gilliland, pioneer resident of the Mechanicsville community, who died from injuries received in a fall. The Rev. Arthur Kindred conducted the service. As Florence E. Brogan, the daughter of Joshua and Elizabeth Brogan, she was born Aug. 11, 1855, and the family came to locate on a farm near Mechanicsville in 1863. Feb. 7, 1875, she was married to D. C. Gilliland. After living on the Brogan farm a few years Mr. Gilliland purchased the Linn Bennett interest in the J. H. Onstott implement business and then moved to Mechanicsville. Mrs Gilliland was a member of Evangeline chapter of the Eastern Star, also of the Ladies' Aid, and taught a Sunday school class for several years. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Maude Stoffel and Mrs. Ethel Norris of Mechanicsville; and one son, Haven, of Muscatine. Mr. Gilliland preceded her in death in 1911.
