23 May 1861 - The Tipton Advertiser

Died, on Sunday morning, May 19th, 1861, JOHN L. FYAN, formerly of Bedford county, Pa., in the 27th year of his age.

MR. FYAN came to Tipton, five years ago, and commenced the practice of law, with as good prospect of success as any man could have. His natural abilities were of a high order, he possessed an excellent education, had pursued a thorough course of legal study in the office of Gov. King of Pa., and being a fluent speaker and ready debater, he soon acquired a good practice, and was looked upon as one of the most promising young attorneys of Cedar county. But the fatal habit of intemperance was fastened upon him and his many good qualities served but to render his ruin more sad.

During several months of the past year the writer was a student in the office of TURNER & FYAN, and can testify that when sober he was a man in the best sense of the word, and I know perhaps as well as any one how he struggled to break the fatal habit that he knew was hurrying him to the drunkard's grave. And I firmly believe that he would have succeeded but for the efforts of the infamous wretches, who, for the sake of profiting by his lavish expenditure of money, when under the influence of liquor, would seek him in his sober moments and tempt and urge him on his downward course. Equally criminal are these who, knowing his weakness would still sell him the poison that was eating out his life. And on the heads of these men rests the responsibility of the death of this unfortunate young man who might otherwise have been a ornament and a blessing to society. G.
