15 July 1920 - West Branch Times

Jim Petersen was born July 12, 1874, in Lyngsoe, Jutland, Denmark. About the age of 20 years he immigrated to America and came to Union Grove, Wis., in 1896. After two or three years stay he went west and came to Cedar county, Iowa, and found a home with his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. John Jensen. He bought a farm ten years ago five miles southeast of West Branch, where he lived part of the time and part of the time had his home with John Jensen's. Jim Petersen had visited several states in the Union but always considered this his home. He was a member of the Danish Lutheran church of West Branch and was baptized and confirmed in the faith in the Lutheran church in Denmark.

He was struck by lightning while at work July 9th and instantly killed at three o'clock in the afternoon.

He leaves his sister, Mrs. John Jensen, and her family, four nephews and one niece and a host of friends to mourn their loss of a loving brother and a devoted friend. Had he lived three days longer he would have been 46 years of age.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Danish Lutheran church and the remains laid to rest in the West Branch cemetery, Rev. H. P. Jensen officiating.
