14 December 1944 - The Clarence Sun

Mrs. August Ruther (nee) Augusta Wollard, daughter of the late John and Christina Broderson Wollard, was born in Holstein, Germany, on March 21, 1881. She was baptized in infancy and in 1894 was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Germany.

The next year, she with several other members of her family came to America, residing in Mitchell Co., Iowa. Here she was married to Hans Christiansen. Six sons came to bless this union, Alvin, Carl, John, Glen, all of Mitchell Co., Pfc. Herbert serving with the U. S. Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Lawrence, SM1c, of the U. S. Navy at Norfolk, Va., all of whom survive.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1935.

On Dec. 2, 1937, she was united in marriage at Osage to August Ruther of Clarence, and since then she has made her home in Clarence.

Mrs. Ruther was of an uncomplaining nature, which was borne out by the fact that tho she undoubtedly suffered, her closest friends were not aware of the seriousness of her condition. On Wednesday, Nov. 15th, at St. Luke's hospital, she underwent an operation of the same nature as one for which she had been operated 11 years ago. Even so, her condition was not considered serious, until the forepart of this week when her strength gradually failed. Death came to close her useful life early on the morning of Dec. 8, 1944. She had attained an age of 63 years, 8 months and 17 days.

She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, August Ruther, the six sons mentioned above, together with their families; numerous more distant relatives and a host of friends.

She was a member of St. John's church, the Women's Guild and the Social Service Department of that organization; also an attendant of the adult Bible class of the church school.

Funeral services were held in St. John's church Sunday afternoon, Dec. 10th, and also at Maroa, Iowa, on Dec. 11th, with burial at the Rock Creek cemetery near Osage, Iowa.
