Marion W. Long, son of Samuel and Sarah Long, was born at Hayes Grove, Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, on January 14, 1878. In this community he attended the local schools and grew to manhood.

There he was united in marriage with Mary Hastings of Huntsdale of the same county. In 1898, the young couple went west to seek the better opportunities of Cedar county. They located on the hill south of Clarence where between the two farms on both sides of the road and that to the south on the west they spent thirty-five years.

To them six children were born, one of whom died in infancy. The others as follows survive: Mable Rotert of Springville, Lester of Mill Hall, Pa., Bruce of Clarence, Merle of Whittier and Robert of Clarence.

In 1934 they moved to town where Mr. Long continued his interest in farming, assisting the various farmers of the community in their operations.

As a boy he became a member of the English Lutheran church.

Mr. Long was interested for many years in the Modern Woodmen and Masonic orders. He served for a time as manager of the Clarence Shippers Ass'n. For some 15 years he was one of the township trustees.

This summer Mr. Long's health began to fail. He submitted to an operation, but in spite of all that medical and surgical skill could do, he slipped from life on October 27th at the State University hospital at Iowa City.

Besides his faithful wife and children mentioned above, he leaves 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the home and the Methodist church, conducted by Elder U. J. Fike, assisted by Rev. A. B. Chamberlin.

He was laid to rest in the Clarence cemetery.

The pallbearers were Sam Thumma,, Geo. Thumma, A. E. Robinson, Ernest Kintzel, Roy M. Joslin, Joe Baker.
