18 May 1944 - The Clarence Sun

Mrs. Dietrich Helmold, nee Caroline Becker, was born in Leese, Germany, on October 30, 1840, she was baptized in infancy and on April 9, 1865, received the rite of confirmation. She was united in bonds of holy matrimony with Dietrich Helmold on Nov. 14, 1871, and together they spent 68 years, separated only by the death of Mr. Helmold which occurred on Dec. 19, 1939. Twelve children blessed this union, but four preceded their parents in death. These four were Paul, who died in infancy, Julius, who died in young manhood, Henry and Sophia, Mrs. Fred Edler.

In 1878, the family, then consisting of father, mother and three children came to America, settling on a farm south of Lowden and remaining until 1891 when they made their home on a farm southeast of Clarence. In 1909 the aged parents retired from the farm, taking up their residence in Clarence. Here they enjoyed the beautiful evening of life together. Living alone until in 1938 when their daughter Ida and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Conrad, moved to town to take care of them.

Mrs. Helmold enjoyed the distinction of being the oldest person living in Clarence and community, having at the time of her death attained the advanced age of 93 years, 6 months and 16 days. Though not in the best of health for a number of years, it was only for less than two weeks that the infirmities of age caused her to be bedfast. The angel of death mercifully released her from the bonds of flesh in the early hours of May 16th.

She leaves to mourn her departure: eight children, Mrs. Lena Syring, Louis Helmold, Mrs. Ida Conrad, Mrs. Amanda Conrad, Mrs. Augusta Bergmann, Mrs. Emma Geadelmann, Fred Helmold and Otto Helmold. 38 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, four great, great grandchildren, a total of 100 descendants, also a number of more distant relatives. Besides the four children already mentioned, one brother, Henry Wilkening, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held this afternoon from the Wm. Conrad residence and St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church with Rev. F. J. Mittler officiating. Interment was made in St. John's cemetery.

The pallbearers were grandsons: Wilbert Helmold, Harold Helmold, Otto Edler, Wm. Geadelmann, Lawrence Conrad and Raymond Conrad. In charge of flowers were her granddaughters: Mrs. Raymond Doermann, Mrs. Elmer Conrad and Mrs. Norman Bergmann.

Both the pallbearers and the flower bearers served in this same capacity for their grandfather.
