10 February 1921 - West Branch Times

William Howard Brown was born in Butler county, Penn., Nov. 2, 1858, and passed to his reward Feb. 2, 1921.

He came to Iowa with his parents when six years of age and has spent the rest of his life in or near West Branch. When a boy he united with the Presbyterian church and has always been faithful in the fellowship of the church; always willing to give of his means and service to promote the Kingdom of God.

January 1, 1884, he was married to Louise R. Lehman, with whom he shared a happy home for thirty-seven years. To this union four children were born, Jessie Hadley of Saskatchewan, Canada; Harold, who passed away eight years ago after reaching the manhood years of twenty-three; Blanch Cowgill of West Branch, and Glenn at home. There are also left to mourn their loss a brother, George Brown, of West Branch; three sisters, Mrs. J. K. Carran, Mrs. C. D. Lodge and Miss Anna Brown, all of West Branch; two other sisters, Mrs. A. A. Black of West Liberty and Mrs. F. K. Michener of Cedar Rapids. There are three grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

In his own life Mr. Brown had a high type of honesty and sincerity, and he measured all character by the same standard. Throughout his life he stood the test suggested in the question, "Who is my neighbor?" In time of misfortune or need of sympathy his kindness and generosity never would let him pass by on the other side.

"It shall come to pass that at evening time it shall be light," was true of his last days. Strength and life were failing but faith and trust in the Pilot of his soul grew stronger.

The services were held in the Methodist church Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. G. Rowley and assisted by Rev. W. H. Wilson of the Friends church. Interment was in the beautiful cemetery on the hill where Mr. Brown's loved ones lie buried.
