Joshua S. Dean, son of Barton and Elizabeth Dean was born 10th month second, 1843 at Augusta, Carrol county, Ohio. In a few years they moved to a farm at Hanover, Columbiana county, Ohio. He was the youngest of seven children of whom the five oldest were half brothers and a sister.

In 10th month 1886 he was married to Mary Ann Hobson of near Bartlett, Washington county, Ohio, and they moved onto his fathers farm at Hanover; later buying a farm near Winona, Ohio. In 1880 they moved to Bartlett, Ohio where he went into the mercantile business with his brother-in-law, J. G. Hobson. Three years later they came to the farm near Whittier where they lived until the spring of 1890, when they removed to West Branch, Iowa, where he again was in the mercantile business for five years. The wife died 4th month first, 1910 since which time he has made his home with his only child, Mrs. Eva Penrose where he passed away on the morning of First month, 18th 1920. He leaves beside the daughter, one grand-child, Mary Louva Penrose and the aged half sister, Ann Brantingham of Winona, Ohio.

He was a jolly and genial disposition making their home a place where people loved to gather and his life was marked by his ever fond solicitation for the welfare of his family.

He was a life-long member of the Society of Friends and the funeral services were held in their meeting house at West Branch at 10 o'clock on First month 21st and the remains were laid to rest beside those of the wife, in the family lot in the local cemetery.
