6 September 1945 - The Clarence Sun

Friends in Clarence were deeply grieved on Sunday to learn of the sudden death Saturday from a heart attack of Maurice D. Read in Minneapolis.

Maurice was mowing his lawn when he felt badly and went into the house. He soon passed away.

On Sept. 16th, Maurice would have reached his 46th birthday. He was enjoying to the utmost his family, their fine suburban home and his occupation. He made and held friendships easily by his congenial nature and his absence will be felt keenly far beyond his own family. He climbed by his own efforts well up in the business world and his future was sharpened for the many happy years that have now been cut off.

Mr. Read was secretary and assistant treasurer of the Minneapolis Gas Light company, going there in 1935 from Benton Harbor, Mich., where he had been associated with a branch of the company.

Born in Clarence on Sept. 16, 1899, he spent his boyhood days here until advancing his education took him from home. He first attended Mexico Military Academy at Mexico, Mo., and then entered Coe College where he received his bachelor's degree in 1922, in which year he was married to Miss Alberta Hoyman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer B. Hoyman of 1840 Seventh Avenue S.E., Cedar Rapids, who survives him, also a daughter, Miss Julianne, and his twin brother, Norris, who lives at Montebello, Calif., also a half brother Geo. D. Read of Scotsbluff, Neb. Both were present Wednesday at the burial.

The funeral was held in Minneapolis on Tuesday and the remains and funeral party came down to Cedar Rapids that night. Burial services were held at the Clarence cemetery at 11 Wednesday morning. Business associates in Minneapolis were the pallbearers. A very beautiful and very large number of floral pieces were sent by friends.
