16 August 1945 - The Clarence Sun

Hosea Ballou, son of Asa and Dilla Batchelor Ballou, was born in Hale Twp., Jones county, on April 24, 1860. He grew to manhood on the farm. On December 11, 1880, he was united in marriage with Maria Schaaf. For twenty years they made their home on the farm just north of the Diamond cemetery where they greatly prospered. In 1900 they moved to Clarence to educate their family. For many years they occupied a fine home in the west part of town, till in 1923 when they moved to Amarillo, Texas. They returned to Clarence in 1932 but later moved to Hale where Mrs. Ballou passed away on January 6, 1940. Since that time Mr. Ballou made his home with his son, Frank, at Strawberry Point and Independence. The infirmities of advancing years were too great a strain upon him and he passed from this life at the Peoples' Hospital at Independence on August 13, 1945. Thus even considering the time he spent out of the Clarence community, Mr. Ballou resided in this community for nearly seventy years.

Over fifty years ago he united with the Pleasant Hill Freewell Baptist church and was prominent in the work of that church for many years. He and his wife finally transferred their membership to the Clarence Presbyterian church.

Mr. Ballou also in his active years took an interest in the Masonic Order. He served as Master of Mt. Hope Lodge for nine consecutive years.

Mr. Ballou enjoyed the confidence of the Clarence community. He was elected and served for several years as mayor of the town of Clarence. Thus another representative of one of the pioneer families of this section having made his contribution for the betterment of humanity has passed to rest and refreshment.

He leaves besides his son, Frank Ballou, and daughter, Kappitola Bond of Corning, New York; a brother, James Ballou of Clarence; a sister, Mrs. Susannah Gardner of Stanwood; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted from the Beck Funeral home on Wednesday, Aug. 15, in charge of Gordon Smith. The Masonic order was in charge of the committal service at the grave in the Clarence cemetery.
