Whenever a mother passes away it leaves a home broken of the ties which hold those within its influence to it. Such will be the case in the passage of Mrs. Nellie Burgess, who after a long illness covering several years of duration passed away on Wednesday, October 29th, 1952, at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 29 days.

The daughter of Adelbert and Gertrude Brown Loomis she was born near Albia, Nebraska. When a child she came to Stanwood. She grew up in the Joseph McCoy home. On April 14, 1898 she was united in marriage with Milo E. Burgess. They spent the active years of her life on the farm.

To them were born the following children: Leroy who passed away in infancy, James of Lone Rock, Wisconsin, Charles of Olin, Mrs. Dorothy Wendt of Mechanicsville. She is also survived by three sisters: Mrs. Florence Whiteman of Plainsville, Ohio, Mrs. Bessie Lane of Olin and Mrs. Mary Nelson of Clinton and six grandchildren. These with their families and the husband and father survive.

Mrs. Burgess interests were centered in the home and her family. She enjoyed doing for them and her grandchildren.

Many years ago she united with the United Presbyterian church in Stanwood. She was delegent in the expression of the practical virtues of her faith.

Most of her life was spent in the Stanwood community tho the last 20 years of her residence had been in Olin. A long illness had sapped her body and mind of energy until the end of life came to her in the Anamosa hospital.
