18 October 1934 - The Tipton Advertiser

The community was shocked and saddened early Monday morning, when the word came that Clarence Sponey, familiarly known as "Doc", was found, lifeless, on the kitchen floor of his home on the Knease farm northwest of town. Roy Knease and Earl E. Scellars went to the farm to engage in the day's work, and discovered the body, with indications that Mr. Sponey had shot himself.

Coroner George Marsh was summoned and the body was taken to Iowa City. Funeral services were held at the McGovern Funeral Home at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon with burial at Iowa City.

Pallbearers were Jake Sider, I. W. Heald, L. I. Henderson, Jens Christensen, S. E. Jeffries and O. O. Yoder.

Mr. Sponey was a World War veteran. For a number of years he had been engaged in farming on the Knease place, living alone. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Russell Painter of this vicinity and one brother, H. I. Sponey. There are also several uncles and aunts, Roy and Fred Sponey, Iowa City; Mrs. Minnie Evans of Newport, Mrs. Cora Michel of Iowa City and Mrs. T. A. Evans of Kasson, Minn.
