Ida Edith Clay was born in Jones County on June 1, 1872, and departed this life on June 23, 1952, at the age of 80 years and 22 days. She was married to James Ballou on March 6, 1895, at which time they established their home in Jones County about 6 miles north of Clarence, and spent their active years in farming. They had been retired in Clarence sine 1909.

Mrs. Ballou was originally a member of the Pleasant Hill church north of Clarence. From there she transferred to The Methodist church of Clarence in 1923, here she was an active and loyal member. She was also a member of the WSCS and of the Wednesday Literary Club.

Mrs. Ballou was a devoted mother and grandmother, and her tender love and deep concern for her own will be greatly missed by her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband James, one brother and one sister.

Survivors include the daughter, Mrs. Marjorie McCaw; two grandchildren, Eugene McCaw and Mrs. Ruth Bachman; and two great-grandchildren; four sisters: Mrs. Anna Sawyer of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. J. W. Fowlie and Mrs. Hans Rohwedder, both of Olin, and Mrs. Bertha Winters of Ramey, Calif.; and one brother, D. O. Clay of Hartley, Iowa.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church here in Clarence at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 1952, conducted by Reverend A. D. Holtry. The music was furnished by Mrs. John Paul and Mrs. A. D. Holtry with Mrs. Marvin Schilling at the organ. In charge of the many beautiful floral sprays were Mrs. Gordon Smith and Mrs. Robert Decker. The pallbearers were Mrs. Ballou's neighbors and friends: Fred Phillips, Herman Hunwardsen, Robert Kelly, Elmer Sawyer, Warren Claney and Fred Bachman.

Interment was made in the Clarence cemetery.
