26 January 1912 - The Lowden News

Heenry Licht died at his home one-half mile west of Lowden on Thursday morning, January 18th, of weakness of the heart muscles, at the age of 83 years, 2 months and 22 days.

Mr. Licht was born on October 27, 1828, at Stadorf, Amt. Ebstorf, Province Hannover, Germany. In 1856 he was married to Dorothea, nee Schroeder, his now sorrowing widow. To this union were born seven sons and two daughters; two of the sons died in infancy.

In 1861 Mr. Licht and family came to America and located in DuPage county, Ill., from there they came to Iowa in 1865, and he has resided near Lowden ever since. Mr. Licht always enjoyed good health, only that in the last few years infirmities of old age began to appear, which since about the first of this month caused him to stay in the house; however, Wednesday, the day before he died, he walked yet about in his room. He awoke at about midnight, apparently not feeling any worse, and soon went to sleep again. At 5 o'clock Thursday morning his family found that he quietly and peacefully had passed away in his sleep, none knowing the exact hour at which death had appeared.

There survive to mourn Mr. Licht's demise his widow, five sons and five daughters-in-law, two daughters and two sons-in-law, 37 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Deceased was during his active years in life a sturdy hard-working farmer, prosperity resulting from his labors and good management. Even after his retirement from the management of farming, he could not well quit work altogether. He was trustee of the Wheatland German Mutual Fire Association for a number of years, holding this office yet at the time of his death. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and citizen, a friendly man. He was a member of the Lowden Lutheran church, being one of the organizers of that congregation here and for many years he held important positions in the same.

Funeral was held Sunday forenoon with services in the Lutheran church, Rev. J. H. Brammer officiated. There was a very large attendance at the funeral and they laid Mr. Licht to rest in the Lowden cemetery. "Friede Seiner Asche."
