21 April 1911 - The Lowden News

August Petersen was born at Hadersleben, Schleswig, Germany, on September 22, 1827. He died at his home at Lowden on Thursday April 13, 1911, of liver trouble and other complication of diseases, after but 10 days severe sickness; having however been ailing some for about a year. He died at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 22 days.

Mr. Petersen served in the army in the old country during the war of 1848-1849. He came to America in 1852, staying for a short time in Scott county Iowa, and then came to Cedar county and settled on a farm in Massillon Twp., northeast of Lowden. In about 1862 he came to Lowden and for twenty years conducted a lumber yard and was a grain dealer. From 1882 to 1889 he was in the mercantile business in the firm, Petersen and Freund. After that Mr. Petersen retired from active work, having during the time of his active life accumulated enough property to spend the evening of his life in comfort.

On November 30, 1864, August Petersen was married at Chicago, to Miss Mathilde Huscher who now survives him to mourn his demise. There also survive Mr. Petersen, three brothers and four sisters and quite a number of nephews and nieces.

Mr. Petersen during his many years residence here formed a large circle of acquaintances and by his honest business methods and friendly manner caused everybody to like him; his brothers and sisters and their families and all other near relatives dearly loved him. He was a model husband and he and his faithful life partner were as happy a couple as ever there could be.

Deceased certainly got more good out of life than most people do, besides enjoying the comforts of his beautiful home here, he got much enjoyment out of frequent traveling, seeing beauties of nature and art in this country and Europe. His wife was always with him.

His funeral was held Sunday afternoon. The popularity of the deceased and the high esteem in which he has been held, might in a measure, be estimated by the large attendance at his funeral. It was as large a gathering of people as have seldom been seen at a funeral here. The services were most impressive, being held in the Evangelical church; Rev. Werning officiating. The many of the audience who can read the German joined in singing a solemn hymn, in German; a choir sweetly sang several beautiful selections in English during the services at the church as also at the house and later at the cemetery. Most beautiful and many were the floral tributes. The six pall bearers were nephews of the deceased, namely, Charles Matthael, August Kochs, Charles Freund, J. H. Andresen, Victor Petersen and Hugo Petersen.

The remains of August Petersen were layed to rest in the Lowden cemetery Sunday afternoon; it being Easter Sunday, the day of commemorating the resurection of the savior, Jesus Christ. Who by his rising from the grave created the soul exalting, hope for mankind, that they through faith, might join Him in his great and shining glory in Heaven, after this life's journey is ended.
