Durant - Henry Hartz, 81, life resident of Durant vicinity, who lived here since retiring 24 years ago, died at 5 p.m., Monday, in his home after a long illness. The body is in the Frick funeral home and will remain there until 10 a.m. Thursday, when it will be taken to the Durant chapel, where services will be held at 2:00 o'clock that afternoon in charge of the Knights of Phythias lodge of which he was a 40-year member. Past chancellors of the lodge will be the bearers. Burial will be in the Durant cemetery.

Mr. Hartz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hartz, pioneers of the community, was born March 15, 1867, in Scott county, received his education in Cedar county, and for several decades farmed with his brothers 2 miles northwest of here. He received his 40-year life membership in the Phythian lodge in 1947.

Three brothers, John, George and Charles; and three sisters, Miss Mary Hartz, Mrs. Anna E. Schiele and Mrs. Henry Glaser, all of Durant, survive. A brother, William, died last October and three other brothers and a sister also preceded him in death.
