Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Rachel Smith, 94, who served as editor of the Tipton Conservative from 1912 to 1936, were July 23. Mrs. Smith died July 20 at Cedar Manor.

Margaret Smith, daughter of Tobias and Theresa Shawver Mayer, was born in Cass township Feb. 24, 1878. She grew to womanhood on the family farm north of Cedar Bluff. She was a school teacher for 2 years and was married to John Stough Smith Sept. 30, 1897 in Tipton.

For 24 years, Mr. and Mrs. Smith published the Tipton Conservative until Mr. Smith's death in 1934. Mrs. Smith continued to live in the north of Tipton until she became a guest at Cedar Manor. She was a life long member of Trinity Lutheran church, serving as treasurer of the church for 29 years. She was active in the mite society and in general welfare work.

Graveside services were conducted by the Rev. Gordon Smith Monday, July 23 with interment in Rochester cemetery. The Dye Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and one sister, Edna Stout Dodds, Utopia Nursing home, Tipton. Her parents and husband preceded her in death.
