Annie Whan was born October 24, 1856, in Cedar county in the Coon Creek community, and departed this life January 2, 1949, at the age of 92 years, 2 months and 8 days. Mrs. Whan spent practically her entire life in Cedar county with the exception of a short stay in Kansas.

She was united in marriage to Francis William Whan on November 29, 1879. They established their home in Tipton. To this union were born three children, who became the fatal victims of diphtheria.

Mrs. Whan was known to her acquaintances as Aunt Ann. The best years of her life were devoted to helping others as their needs were her greatest interests. She took her nephew Herbert Richards at the age of three months and reared him to manhood. She spent her last thirteen winters in his home.

She did practical nursing and cared for the sick and needy in many homes in Cedar county. She never turned anyone away without help when they came to her door.

Mrs. Whan was a member of the local Methodist church of very long standing and was active in the affairs of the church as long as health permitted.

Those who preceded her in death were her parents, her husband and their three children: Harry, at the age of 5 years and 9 months on Nov. 3, 1887; Frederick, at the age of 4 years on Nov. 6, 1887, Esse, at the age of 2 years and 3 months on Nov. 20, 1887. Those who mourn her departure are: her sister, Mrs. Temperance Swartzlender, Indianapolis, Indiana, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Richards and family of Tipton, besides 10 other nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, January 6, at 2:00 o'clock in the Sheets funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Leo G. Wolfe. Interment in the Masonic cemetery.
